Resolve – Mind Awake, Body Asleep
French heavyweights Resolve have released their new single ‘Mind Awake, Body Asleep’, the third single taken from the recently announced new album, ‘Spread My Ashes Into Space’, set for release on January 15th, 2027 via Arising Empire.
Speaking of the new single, vocalist Anthony Diliberto shares:
Mind Awake, Body Asleep is about sleep paralysis, something that has deeply affected my nights for several years. I experienced one particularly intense episode a few years ago, and while I’m now better at recognizing what is happening, the line between sleep paralysis, nightmares and reality can still become difficult to distinguish. I’ve also developed a reflex that wakes me up instantly just as I’m falling asleep, as well as a sense of paranoia that gradually sets in as the night goes on. Strangely, these episodes happen almost exclusively when I’m at home, and very rarely when I’m away or on tour.
The lyrics also touch on the way sleep paralysis was interpreted in the past, long before the phenomenon could be explained medically. It’s a set of lyrics I’m particularly attached to. I feel like the song naturally evolves into something increasingly oppressive, and captures quite accurately what it feels like to be fully conscious while trapped inside your own body, at the mercy of what your mind is making you experience.
The title is a reference to Mr. Robot, and more specifically to the idea of Elliot’s second personality taking over at night while he believes he is simply asleep.
Ultimately, there is one question I like to leave unanswered: is what we see in those moments actually real? We can explain the mechanisms behind sleep paralysis, but that doesn’t necessarily make the experience itself feel any less real. I like the idea that somewhere between sleep and wakefulness, there might be an invisible dimension that we are only able to access for a few brief moments.
The step up that we’re hearing on this album is quite something, and putting the exclamation mark on that is this banger of a single. A vibrant and expressive outburst of passionate melodic metalcore that has a stadium feel. Resolve have always been a good band, but they’ve hit a whole new level now.
Oathgate – Ashes
Oathgate are brand-new London based dark metal band making their introduction with debut single ‘Ashes’.
A very dramatic and noteworthy introduction to Oathgate, this debut single is a powerful showcase of haunting melody, sinister metal heaviness, and strong story telling vibes. There’s a sense that they’re a band with ambition, and this track reflects that thoroughly.
Cober Mouth – The Drain
Bristol-based nu-metalcore outfit Cober Mouth have released their new single, ‘The Drain’.
Capping off a brilliant year for the band, this latest Cober Mouth single is a banger. Taking a ‘shock and awe’ approach, the nu-infused metalcore intensity of the band comes fast and hard, and it will leave most in awe. The crunching heaviness of the instruments, the fiery intensity of the vocals, the experimental touches that see it shift direction, and the gurn-inducing breakdown at the end, all combine to make it very special.
Winterburn – The Abyss
Middle Eastern heavy rock titans Winterburn have released their new single and accompanying music video, ‘The Abyss’.
It’s time to get your groove on, Winterburn have an old-school riff-driven, horn-throwing, and head-banging inducing rock tune for everyone to enjoy. It’s an easy track to like with bundles of appealing factors, least of all the catchy chorus.
prom – Borderline
To celebrate signing to Church Road Records, prom have released their new video single ‘Borderline’.
About the single, prom says:
‘Borderline’ was one of the earlier songs that was brought to the table after finishing recording the first LP. From the get go we knew we wanted to dive deeper into the heavier elements of what makes “prom” the emotional-hardcore band that we are, paying homage to the Brighton hardcore and emo scenes respectively. The idea of aggression can be deeper understood by watching the music video, directed by TABBYCAT, who brought all of our wishes of feeling weary and unsettled to life. An emotional band for those who express their feelings physically.
There’s a morose heavy vein running through the emo-tinged post-hardcore sound of this track that gives it so much more bite. That is what I really liked about it, even though I can’t deny the thick sense of melodrama that surrounds it is equally appealing. It’s a very strong effort from a band with creative ideas.
Art of Shock – Antichrists
The Art of Shock revival continues with mighty aplomb. Following up ‘You Are the Plague’ with the brand-new single, ‘Antichrists’. Out now through AOMFS Records.
Back with another beast of a track, Art of Shock hit hard here. Delivering an anthemic frenzied blast of vibrant heaviness. It’s harsh, but with thick rivets of melody jammed in, and a chorus that is very catchy, it ends up being quite accessible overall. I like it.
Shevils – The Force of Water
Norwegian hardcore band, Shevils have released ‘The Force of Water’, the third single from their fifth album ‘Sect Resurrection’, coming February 19th, 2027.
The strength of feeling in this track can be best summed up as startling and Shevils proudly let their emotions run away here. Delivering a chaotic piece of music that is layered with miserable, but pretty, melodies. It’s hardcore, but not as you know it. They’re a great band, and this is another great song from them.
Thawn – Rotten
Thawn are a three-piece alt-metal band from South Wales who have recently released their new single, ‘Rotten’.
A creative listen that keeps you on your toes, while also unable to deny the urge to move and groove, Thawn’s alt-metal sound has a freshness that is universally appealing. Filled with intense melodies, attention grabbing hooks, and plenty of hefty power, it’s a strong effort.
Repriever – Fragile
Sydney progressive metalcore outfit Repriever return with their new single ‘Fragile’, out now.
Modern metalcore with some serious bite, Repreiver throw their all into leaving an impression here, and do so with ease. All by being a bit experimental, especially when it comes to melodic lulls and softer vocals, but really hitting hard when it comes to upping the heaviness.
Overpower – Chain Reaction
The British crossover titans Overpower have released the new single ‘Chain Reaction’ and announced their debut album ‘…And the Moon Became as Blood’. Set for release on January 29th via Church Road Records.
Says the band about the new single:
‘Chain Reaction’ is set in the ruins of a holy atomic war that has torn the very fabric of reality apart. Clawing through the desolation, the remnants of humanity are physically and spiritually lost in the dark. In a world where even time has become unstable, parallel dimensions bleed together, and sometimes something might slip through the cracks…
A track to head bang so hard to that you’re left seeing stars and with your ears ringing, it’s a simple as that. Overpower aren’t messing around here, offering up a fast-paced, crunching, and ugly thrash and death-infused metal track that comes with riffs. Oh so many riffs.
