EP Review: Onryō – Exit Here (Self Released)

Onryō, the Japanese horror themed technical metalcore band, have released their debut EP, ‘Exit Here’.

I absolutely love the idea behind Onryō as I’ve always had a fascination with Japanese horror. So to hear it infused into metal and used to create interesting and complex soundscapes is certainly attention grabbing.

So, what do we have on this EP? Five hefty head-bangers that have a bulging vein of vibrant horror running through them. Kicking off with the crunching nu-infused intensity of the title track, something that really surprises when a set of harmonised, epic vocals join the fray. Before Onryō really let loose on the following Monochrome, an anthemic, frenetic blast of heart-racing energy and extravagant technicality. Then follow that up with even more chaotic drama warped by hardy and heavy metalcore that draws from the past, present, and future. The ending to this track is a particular harsh delight.

There’s no ‘one and done’ here, I think, as this is a layered EP and it needs time and multiple listens to really appreciate. For example, on first listen, Tongues of War can feel a little messy and unrefined, but on subsequent listens, chaotic order becomes clear, and the rawer tone ends up being an integral part of what makes it appealing. It’s probably the most maddening track on the record, and I kind of love it.

Finally, wrapping things up is In Ignorance. A sharp and savage shock to the system that builds on the inventive horror-laden drama, vibrant technical heaviness, and soaring epic infusions in style.

Colour me impressed. Onryō have a unique sound that comes with so many creative parts and this EP will grab a lot of attention.
