Single Slam: Lamentation by The Hope Burden

12/04/2020 Carl Fisher 2 min read

The Hope Burden are an atmospheric post-metal band from Oxfordshire, UK. The aim has always been to create expansive soundscapes with a cinematic scope, combining heaviness and stark melodic passages. With influences ranging from post-rock to black metal the band have created a sound that crosses genre divides.

Extensive local gigging preceded the band’s debut 3-track EP ‘Decline. Despair. Decay’ which was released for free on most platforms in June 2018. The band then won the Oxford Bloodstock Metal 2 The Masses competition in 2019 going on to play a successful show at the festival in August of that year.

Now, on April 17th 2020 The Hope Burden return with a brand new track entitled ‘Lamentation’.

Leading up Bloodstock 2019, we got to know The Hope Burden and fell in love with their dreary post/black heavy sound. The debut EP ‘Decline. Despair. Decay‘ is one of our favourite EP releases of the last couple of years. So it is with a lot of excitement that we now have a brand new track from the band.

Even more exciting is that we get to tell you that the quality of the debut EP was not a fluke.

Lamentation is a stellar piece of post/black heaviness that will take listeners on an emotionally heavy experience. Within the first 10 seconds, the band exploding with crushing intent. The guitars ring with post-metal eeriness, the vocals deliver a scathing assault assisted by percussion that is the Hope Burden at their most aggressive.

Of course, the band take us on a wandering soundscape of wonder along the way. The breaks into melodious lows absolutely hair-raising and chill inducing stuff. If you can collect yourself in time, there’s a ton of crushing head-banging moments to enjoy too. The finale? Holy hell is that something else.

The Hope Burden are such a special band, one of the most promising acts in the UK right now. Their blend of post and black is genuinely some of the most captivating stuff you’ll hear and Lamentation is simply wonderful.
