Album Review: Within Nostalgia – Void & Decay (Self Released)

13/12/2020 Carl Fisher 2 min read

Canada’s With Nostalgia’s new album “Void & Decay” is out on December 18th 2020. The follow-up to their 2019 album “Conjuring A New Reality”.

Formed as a creative outlet for negative emotions, Within Nostalgia came about from the desire to look into the past for a different perspective today. The tracks on this album reflect a certain time in the duo’s lives. “Void and Decay” portrays the two extremes; the void is the destined path of our society whereas the decay represents the result of the chaos in the world we live in.

The lyrics come from a personal expression that encompasses many forms of emotion and observation as well as relating these things to nature. The inspiration comes from self-reflection and the reflection of the world around us, turning negative events and emotions into something relatable.

Delivering an album of downbeat melodic doom and post/death metal, Within Nostalgia pour freezing water over naked bodies shivering in the cold of winter. The resulting cascade will take the breath away.

City of Nameless Faces begins with a focus on haunting guitar melodies and softly sung vocals. Evolving though with sudden bursts of death-infused heaviness and an elaborately played latter portion.

The heavier side of the band continues to be showcased as Beneath Unworthy Presence comes blazing out of the gates. Of course, there are shifts a-plenty as powerful post-like rhythms and melodic lulls help make this track one of the most memorable.

Although BlackLight is certainly the most emotionally charged as the ringing post-driven guitars are cold and distant but lively. The vocals are the real gut-wrenching element though, mellow but pointed. Like an icicle to the heart.

Revelling in their misery but more than willing to discharge scornful ferocity at a whim, Higher Than My Fears and Desideratum deliver continued levels of intricate heaviness layered with thoughtful passages of melody. It is delightfully and beautifully expressed music.
