Album Review: Novarupta – Marine Snow (Suicide Records)

12/11/2020 Carl Fisher 2 min read

Formed in 2018 from the pyres of time spent in Swedish post-metal outfit The Moth Gatherer, Alex Stjernfeldt’s Novarupta has gone on to envelop almost every corner of Sweden’s underground rock and metal community.

Named after one of the largest volcanic eruptions of the 20th Century, this November, Novarupta once again join forces with Suicide Records for the release of Marine Snow; the second instalment in a series of four albums that conceptually focuses on the elemental forces of Fire, Water, Air and Earth.

Novarupta’s Marine Snow is released worldwide on 13th November 2020 on Suicide Records.

Post metal with a deft touch and an eclectic take, Novarupta’s Marine Snow is a chilling event with far reaching highs and lows. An album that might only have 5 tracks but conveys a difficult and deep journey with relative ease. An album that requires time and patience as every track does something different. Tracks that head off in unique directions, tracks that always feels like they’re a couple of seconds away from erupting and tracks that leave an uneasy but satisfied feeling deep in the stomach.

Like trying to catch smoke in your hands, you might think you have a strong grasp on Novarupta’s Marine Snow but when you open up, it dissipates in an instant. The undefinable nature of this music is like being in a colourful fever dream one moment then acutely aware of the sharp greys and muted tones of your surroundings the next.

Through an impassioned and durable performance, It all blurs together to the point where the dream world and waking world become indistinguishable to each other. Drift away with Novarupta and find yourself lost in the depth of Marine Snow.
