Album Review: Behemoth – I, Scvlptor (Massacre Records/Nuclear Blast)

Behemoth, the Polish extreme metal legends will unleash their new studio record, ‘I, Scvlptor’, on September 4th, 2026, via Massacre Records and Nuclear Blast.

A tight, focused, and stern sounding record, Behemoth continue the blackened maliciousness that permeated their previous album, ‘The Shit Ov God’, yet continue to showcase their ever-evolving craft. ‘I, Scvlptor’ is a unique record, not quite an album, but so much more than an EP. Featuring eight previously unreleased songs, seven of which are new studio recordings, with one live track.

The modern theatrical side to Behemoth is on offer with the opening title track. Where sinister and cinematic vibes ooze out of every pore, and blackened groove adds musicality to evil tones. It’s a really strong track, especially when held up against the following Lord ov the Horizons’, a track that doesn’t quite have the same bite. The dour melody and clean singing is different, and pairs nicely with the fiery blackened eruptions, but it’s not the most exciting of listens.

It’s back to the past though with Rise of the Blackstorm of Evil, a re-recorded version of the track that comes from 1992’s The Return of the Northern Moon, and In Thy Pandemaeternum, which comes from 1998’s Pandemonic Incantations. Deep cuts given a fresh makeover that is more in line with the modern Behemoth sound. Fear not though, while the rawness may not be there now, both tracks are furiously intense, nonetheless.

Begotten is the last original track on the release and is a short, sharp, and rampaging effort with some creative twists. Before two covers (one of which is live), and rough mix of another track caps things off. First, we have a raucous version of Venom’s In League with Satan, a track that also features the vocal talents of Dimmu Borgir’s Shagrath. Then we have a great version of The Return of Darkness and Evil, a Bathory cover that features the might of Sakis Tolis from Rotting Christ. How cool is that? Two covers that are a must listen for hardcore Behemoth fans.

Overall, there’s more on offer here than most ‘bridging’ releases. Not only do fans get original tracks, but they get re-recorded versions of early tracks, covers, and more. We know where Behemoth have been, but it’s fair to say that we can never really know where they are going. Regardless, it’s sure to be exciting.
