EP Review: Orochen – Thylacine (Suicide Records)

Orochen is more than a band, it’s a collective with the purpose to always refine and develop their novel sound. A new member in Suicide Records family, Orochen will now release their third EP titled ‘Thylacine’ on September 18th 2020..

The striped Tasmanian tiger went extinct in the 20th century, and the question is who is next in line? Orochen’s Thylacine EP is all about encapsulating the feelings about today’s world and the internal struggle of our modern way of living.

With an ethereal and eerie ring to their rock, Orochen draw from the well of post-rock but don’t drink too deeply from it at first. Instead focusing on delivering an indie-riffic start with Burial Mounds. A track that gets the foot tapping and head nodding along.

With Drift Away (an apt title), Orochen take us floating through the ether on a melodious, yet dark post-journey. Whereas the following Inside the City is a little more energetic with a heck load of deep guitar groove. All before the EP comes to a close with the truly shadowy and uncomfortable The Jonestown Deathtape. Where part of the infamous recording is played with the backdrop of cold melody that develops into unbridled sludgy heaviness as it goes on. It will chill you to your bone but is also the most unforgettable track of the bunch.
