EP Review: Le Menhir – Aube (Self Released)

07/12/2018 Carl Fisher 1 min read

A one man band post metal experiment, Le Menhir is the work of Paul Sparshott who has released the EP, Aube on the 30th November 2018.

Aube 2

Three tracks long, Rituel serves as the intro. An intro that heralds an arrival with its wartime march and impressive bagpipe use (Catie Williams plays these). It gets the blood flowing and the mind aflame for what could follow.

Monstre is what comes next with the bleakness of black metal filtered through a post-metal soundscape that gives it a haunted and morose edge. Something that is heightened by wailing vocals that cut through the metal like a hot knife through butter. It is a little off putting at first but as it settles down, what we’re left with is a truly sombre and emotive track. Very good stuff.

The other track on this EP is called Centenaire and delivers more of the same but at an even slower and more doomy pace. A vast and swirling whirlpool of fuzziness with the clean vocals ringing loud and true above everything to the point they are almost crooning. Very different and very enjoyable.

A great offering from Le Menhir and Paul Sparshott, continuing to prove that there is plenty for one-man projects to offer the world of rock and metal.
