Album Review: Kuilu – Monumentti (Deviant Records)

Kuilu was formed in 2010 in Lappeenranta, Finland and Monumentti is their debut full-length album. 4 tracks of cold, dark black metal, the album is out now via Deviant Records.

Spreading darkness from cold lands, Sisyfos understated start doesn’t prepare you for what follows. The soft, dis-jointed and raw tones increase leading to a bleak level of heaviness and speed that gets the attention. A varied song that refuses to sit still, it’s followed by the even more imaginative Madot.

Both the first two tracks give off a post-metal vibe as much as black metal and it certainly allows for some fascinating moments. However, Kuilu seem most comfortable when just breathing fire with their intense showing.

Each track has the length of an epic but its Rauniot that really delivers on it. A positively huge track, the coldness seeps deeper into your bones but it’s welcome. Then there is the title track, also the final one of the record.

…and what a finale it is. Continuing the trend of off-beat riffing, injections of black metal pace and post-metal melody, it closes things out in spectacular fashion. Proving once and for all that Kuilu are one of the most exciting bands to emerge from the darkness of black metal in a while.
