Album Review: Grant The Sun – Biomes (Mas-Kina Recordings)
One of the most creative progressive metal bands in the world, Grant the Sun are back with their most ambitious record yet. It is ‘Biomes’, and it is out on October 16th, 2026, via Mas-Kina Recordings.

I love a progressive rock and/or metal band that isn’t afraid to experiment outside of the genre. A progressive rock and/or metal band that isn’t afraid to explore, isn’t afraid to change up the formula, and defy expectations. Which might sound like what you’d expect from progressive music, but rarely do bands push past the limits in the way Grant the Sun does. The result is a thrilling examination of who they are and what they can do, wrapped up in bright and brash explosion of progressive and post thinking.
Doing a stellar job of making their music infectiously accessible, while having the kind of depth that progressive fans can study and analysis, Grant the Sun showcase an immense level of evolution in all areas. Not only more instrumentally clever, compelling, and chaotic, but vocally varied. By getting the balance right, it keeps interest high as the tone ebbs and flows.
What I really like is that there’s scale too and many times throughout, the trio sound positively huge. This also extends into attitude too, and the range of heavy ideas crossed with harmonious moments is quite something.
Of course, a lot of my words here are designed to be preaching to the choir. If you are so inclined to want to sink into this kind of music, to let it surround you, and allow yourself to be challenged by the creativity on show, then you’re going to have a great time. However, a key word is challenge, and with that comes a need for patience. The album is vast, there are layers upon layers of detail, and their expression isn’t always as straightforward as it might seem.
Highlights include the dynamic Tedium, how progressively volatile The Taos Hum is, the heaviness that Jaguar offers, and how weird and wonderful Heliconia is. Four tracks that I found to be really satisfying, but certainly not the only quality offerings from the record. It’s eleven tracks long overall, and there’s something worth hearing in every single one of them.
Grant the Sun’s hard work has paid off, Biomes is a masterpiece. Showcasing evolution in a bright and brilliant way. There’s something for everyone here, and it goes above and beyond all expectations of what progressive music can be.
