EP Review: The Crawling – What We Leave Behind (Grindscene Records)

As bleak as ever, the Northern Irish death and doom band, The Crawling emerge from the darkness with a brand-new EP called ‘What We Leave Behind’. The two-track release is out on October 2nd, 2026, via Grindscene Records.

Drawing inspiration from how we can sometimes live in the past, to the detriment of our future, The Crawling take a deep dive into harsh and heavy melancholy as only they can do. Living up to their reputation for taking a dramatic approach to death and doom, infusing gloomy harmony into everything, but creating a disconcerting balance here.

The two tracks are different sides of a coin. The former, A Song to Nurse the Sickness is the heavier side of The Crawling. Showcasing a methodical and expansive guitar-driven style of doom that comes with death-infused vocals. It’s a potent listen with strong sounding bursts of energy. The latter is as melancholic as it gets, showcasing a composed theatrical side to The Crawling and taking the listener on a heart-wrenching journey built around acoustic melodies and clean singing.

If you’re thinking it sounds familiar, it’s because the track comes from the band’s excellent All Of This For Nothing release. Although it didn’t sound quite like this. Which just proves how versatile The Crawling are today.
