Album Review: The Meffs – Business (FLG)

Essex-based duo The Meffs return with ‘Business’, their second full length record, set for release this September 11th on Frontiers Label Group.

I love a punk album that has appeal way beyond the genre’s base, especially when that appeal is instantaneous. I also love when a punk band isn’t afraid to experiment, but mostly, I love it when a punk band lives up to the idea that punk should be angry and noisy.

Say hello to The Meffs, although chances are that you are already well and truly aware of them. After all, they’ve seriously blown up and for good reason.

Managing to be both political and personal, Business is The Meffs at their most explosive sounding. Delivering addictive intensity, a blend of sharpness and bluntness, hyperactivity, and powerful points. I warn you now, if you’re one of those idiots who scream ‘keep politics out of music’, you’re going to be gnashing and wailing throughout this banger record.

I’m not the biggest punk fan, so that The Meffs aren’t as easily definable as that, suits me. However, punk is at the core of their sound and an important component of their attitude. The two-piece have plenty to say and won’t be silenced. That is how we end up with furious and fiery tracks like the title track, which takes aim at the music industry, and tracks like Disorder (Wake Up), which is potent commentary on the world overall. Just two fantastic examples of The Meff’s lovable, outspoken ways.

How f**king anthemic is a track like So Modern (Keep Up)!? A grin-inducing track that shows just why this band has captured the imagination of so many.

I found myself listening to the entire album over and over again, and only occasionally stopping to repeat certain tracks. That’s how strong a record it is overall. Tracks like Dreamin’, Where Did It All Go Wrong?, Fight, and Love to Lose are so energetic and chaotic sounding I can’t help but love them. Not that I’m trying to not enjoy what The Meffs have to offer, I just didn’t expect to like the album as much as I do. Isn’t that the best feeling? I am sold!
