EP Review: Lifeswallower – Lifeswallower (Prog On! Recordings)

Lifeswallower, the proggy child of death, thrash, and more, have released their debut self-titled EP via Prog On! Recordings.

Lifeswallower might be a new band but the members within are far from new to the scene. This means we have a debut here with a bit more refinement, a bit more focus, and a bit more experimentation than what you might normally expect from an extreme metal debut. The result is an extensive and thrilling trawl through the chaotic mind of this band.

There are four tracks on offer, and each showcases a different side to Lifeswallower. Defy my World is death-focused; filled with vitriolic vocals, harsh guitars, and pummelling drums. Whereas The Trees Hide Their Bodies has a darker and sharper technical edge with clean vocals soaring high, and Abandon the Body of Rot is the thrashier effort, going fast and hard.

Finally, there’s Compound Fears, a track that is a bit more of a ‘mishmash’ of everything Lifeswallower has to offer on the EP. Aggressive and intense, but with clever twists that makes the rawness easier to stomach, the progressive touches are fascinating. It caps off an EP that warrants multiple listens, with Lifeswallower earning them through sheer focused determination to showcase their many layers.
