Album Review: Novere – Nothing Stays Hidden in Daylight (Trepanation Recordings)

09/10/2023 Carl Fisher 2 min read

London post-metal quartet Novere released their brand-new record, ‘Nothing Stays Hidden in Daylight’ on October 1st, 2023, via Trepanation Recordings.

On this record, Novere played with the concept of light and darkness through personal stories about existential suffering, lost love, mourning and drug addiction. It focuses on exposing demons hidden deep inside of us – facing them and letting them out to find peace within.

Novere have proven time and time again that they can express beauty from the most despondent of music. Showcasing depth and heaviness, blended to perfection with personal misery, but given a hopeful twist. The four tracks that make up this release are some of Novere’s most creative pieces. and as a whole, the record stays with you long afterwards.

It is a hugely impressive effort from a band that continues to grow and grow, expanding beyond the limitations of the post-metal genre, and beginning to really make their own mark. Each track is a journey, and when heard in the context of the full album, Novere exhaust the senses here. Yet, not in a way that leaves you wanting it to be over. The detailed flow, clever tone shifts, dramatic splendour, and driven aspects of the stories showcase music that needs time and multiple listens.

Yet, because it is so addictive, few will deny Novere the time and effort needed.

There’s no single track to recommend, each is a gigantic experience that has the ability to force a listener to be hit with a torrent of emotion. All while relishing in the moving melodies and pounding heaviness that permeates each effort. Yet, of all the tracks, it might be Aphelion that truly stands out because it is so much more elaborate. Which is saying something as the other three tracks; Hydra, Danse Macabre, and Cromlech, are phenomenally intricate too.

Nothing Stays Hidden in Daylight and with that, Novere’s excellence is surely coming into brighter focus now.
